The Seventh Axis from Igus Quadruples the Robot's Range of Action

The seventh axis from Igus now allows lightweight articulated robots (maximum weight 121 pounds) to quadruple their previous operating range. The foundation is an aluminum linear rail up to 20 feet long, on which a carriage glides using four bushings made of lubrication-free high-performance plastic. The entire system is powered by an electric motor with a belt drive, achieving a maximum speed of 2 feet per second. Igus specifies the positioning accuracy as ± 0.01 inches. Users can mount their robot on the carriage using an adapter kit. Igus also provides suitable energy chains made of high-performance plastic to protect power and data cables during movement. This is recommended by Igus since approximately 35 percent of robot failures are due to poor cable management. The axis is available starting at $2,475, with an additional cost of $3,000 for control cabinet integration. The relatively low costs can be attributed, among other factors, to the use of high-performance plastics.
