Hyundai has officially opened its $165 million test facility at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany. This facility aims to advance collaboration with the main development center in Namyang, South Korea, regarding new models of the group brands Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis.

The 270,000 sq ft facility features the largest semi-anechoic chamber in the group, enabling unrestricted testing of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) as well as pass-by noise, regardless of weather conditions. The test benches at the Square Campus play a central role in development. They allow comprehensive testing of vehicles and individual components and are suitable for fully electric, hybrid, and conventional combustion engine drives. Other facilities include a charging lab for electric vehicles, a state-of-the-art driving simulator, and new systems for advanced electronics system development, including over-the-air updates, cybersecurity, and modern driver assistance systems.

The HMETC can therefore test and validate all vehicle types under real conditions while simultaneously developing future products specifically tailored to the expectations of European customers. While testing prototypes under real conditions will remain an essential part of the development process, the Square Campus protects against the challenges associated with outdoor testing and complements the group's existing global testing and knowledge exchange programs.

Investments in Talents And Technologies

The Square Campus supports the environmental goals of the automaker and its subsidiaries through the use of recycled materials, photovoltaic modules, and heat pump systems. The significant expansion of the development center also forms the foundation for the further growth of the HMETC team, which has increased by 20 percent since 2024 to now over 500 employees. This investment in talent and technologies aims to drive innovations by bringing together experts from various disciplines to "further develop the group's vision for electrified, connected mobility."

The group's European development facilities also include the HMETC test center at the Nürburgring, which was opened in 2013 and also expanded with an investment of $14 million. Since the expansion completed in January 2025, it now features modern testing facilities, workshop areas, and specialized laboratories on the newly added area of 9,000 sq ft. (se)
