Huawei has officially unveiled its imaging lidar system with dual optical path. According to the announcement, it is the world's most powerful 896-line lidar in series production. The system has two optical paths that increase the resolution by up to four times. This was reported by the news site Car News China, citing the official presentation of the sensor.

The system can therefore reliably and clearly detect small objects with a height of just 5.5 inches from a distance of 390 feet, for example overturned traffic cones, flat tires and other objects with low reflectivity.

"The Lidar Detects A Dog Wagging Its Tail"

Jin Yuzhi, head of Huawei Intelligent Automotive Solutions, explained, according to the news site, "that this lidar product integrates two laser receiving units with different focal lengths. One unit provides a wide-angle overview, while the other captures details in the distance. Working together, they create a high-resolution picture-in-picture effect."

The system can clearly detect small obstacles above the chassis, obstacles with low reflection and irregularly shaped objects. According to Car News China, Yuzhi cited the example that the new lidar can even clearly detect a dog wagging its tail from a distance of 180 feet.

What Does the Line Count of A Lidar Sensor Mean?

The number of lines of a lidar describes the number of scan lines, or layers, with which the system can scan vertically. Each layer corresponds to an independent laser beam. The more layers, the higher the resolution of the scanned 3D point cloud can be displayed; and therefore pedestrians, vehicles, obstacles and other details.

The number of layers differs depending on the manufacturer and purpose of the lidar. Common lidar systems for vehicles with simple ADAS functions have 16, 32 or 64 layers. Robotaxis require sensors with 64, 128 or more layers.

These Cars Come With 896-Line Lidar

According to Car News China, the first vehicles to be equipped with the new lidar will be the HIMA Aito M9, a large luxury SUV, and the Maextro S800 luxury sedan. According to the news site, Avatr and Voyah reported that their new Avatr 12 and Voyah FE models will also be equipped with the new lidar. There are also talks between Huawei and other car manufacturers regarding the 896-line lidar.
