The battery of the RML Group, cooled with the novel immersion cooling technology, is considered powerful and safe. It has a voltage of 800 volts and a capacity of 4.2 kilowatt-hours. It weighs only 75 kilograms and the discharge rate is greater than 100 Coulombs. The extremely high-power output, especially during vigorous acceleration or rapid charging, requires a correspondingly efficient cooling system. According to BASF, immersion cooling is recommended to avoid extreme temperatures and ensure a more homogeneous temperature distribution as it greatly improves the efficiency and lifespan of the entire battery system. Two BASF plastics are used in the RML battery unit. In one case, Ultramid B3EG7 (polyamide-6-GF35) serves as both the housing material for the battery unit itself and is installed in the housing of the electrical components of the battery control. Also on board is Ultramid A3EG6 (polyamide-66-GF30), which is used for the individual battery cell holder in the battery case.

Ultramid B3EG7 is, as mentioned, used for the stable housing material and the battery unit itself. In addition, Ultramid A3EG6 EQ, a particularly pure material, is used in the individual battery cell holders.

The right plastics for battery applications

The two Ultramid EQ types (EQ = Electronic Quality) are described by BASF as extremely pure. This means they contain hardly any electrically active or corrosion-enhancing ingredients, yet they still offer very good heat-ageing resistance. The material minimises any type of diffusion out of the material when in contact with dielectric fluid. Dielectric fluids serve, among other things, as electrical insulation and as a coolant in high-voltage applications. Contamination by contact materials must therefore be avoided at all costs. In addition to materials, BASF also offers comprehensive services such as component simulation. With Ultrasim, for example, components can be specifically developed for specific requirements to create highly stressable, efficient, and lightweight components according to individual customer needs.
