Trade fair chief Gary Shapiro, head of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), presented the award to Digital Minister Volker Wissing (independent), who had come to Las Vegas with a delegation. In addition to Germany, 24 other countries were classified in the highest category of an "Innovation Champion." The highest award was given to countries with well-trained professionals, fast broadband internet, an entrepreneurial-friendly climate, and openness to new technologies.

Shapiro said the assessment system was introduced in 2019. "It is meant to rank the country according to the guidelines and practices that fuel the fire of innovation or stand in the way of progress." The CTA examines which countries have the political, economic, and demographic conditions that encourage innovators to invent the future.

"It is not just about evaluating investments and reducing red tape for startups, but also recognizing that countries can guarantee freedom of expression, create opportunities for a diverse working environment, and respect people's fundamental freedoms."

Wissing said the innovation award was encouraging and made him optimistic. "However, the award is also a good example that we often talk ourselves down in many areas in Germany." Abroad, the location is perceived more positively. "Made in Germany is still popular here." With regard to the CES exhibitors from Germany, it can be said that the innovations shown here make it clear that Germany is "right at the forefront."

In addition to Germany, Australia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, the Czech Republic, and the United States were also recognized as innovation champions.
