BMW is preparing the San Luis Potosí plant for the production of the New Class. For this purpose, the car manufacturer is building a high-voltage battery assembly over approximately 80,000 square meters and is expanding the body shop, assembly and logistics areas. BMW is investing around 800 million euros in the expansion.

From the year 2027, BMW will manufacture the New Class in Mexico. The "Sports Activity" model is already starting at the new Debrecen plant in Hungary at the end of 2025. The sedan will follow from 2026 in Munich. In Mexico, BMW then wants to create additional production capacity for the model, primarily for the Sports Activity model.

Additional battery factories and new round cells

In addition to the San Luis Potosí site, BMW is building additional battery factories: in Debrecen in Hungary, in Shenyang in China, in Woodruff near Spartanburg in the USA, and in Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Germany. The car manufacturer wants to remain flexible and reduce the CO2 footprint in vehicle production with short distances.

In the New Class, BMW reportedly uses newly developed round cells for the first time. Their energy density is expected to increase by 20 percent, and their range by 30 percent. BMW also mentions an "improved charging speed".

In addition to integrating battery assembly, BMW is continuing to convert the San Luis Potosí plant. The body shop is growing by just under 20,000 to a total area of over 90,000 square meters. Almost 10,000 square meters of assembly and logistics space are also being added.

20 percent of the electricity demand through photovoltaics

In Mexico, BMW wants to expand the photovoltaic systems within the factory and double the output from photovoltaics. This is intended to convert more than 20 percent of the current electricity demand directly on the factory premises. In addition, BMW expanded the wastewater treatment plant for 3.3 million euros.

Approximately 3,700 employees are currently working at the BMW San Luis Potosí plant, manufacturing the 3 Series Sedan, the 2 Series Coupe, and the M2 models. The factory began car production in 2019. (thg)
