Qualcomm and BMW present their jointly developed system for automated driving at IAA Mobility 2025. The system, called "Snapdragon Ride Pilot," is set to debut in the new BMW iX3 and will subsequently be offered to all manufacturers.

1,400 developers from five countries have been working on the system since 2021, according to figures provided by the supplier on the resources invested. The system combines Qualcomm's chips with a software stack jointly developed by both companies.

Scalable Platform That Learns

The scalability of the platform ranges from simple single-camera systems to multi-sensor configurations for Level-2+ functions. The system learns from global vehicle fleets via a cloud-based “data flywheel.”

The BMW iX3 serves as a demonstrator to showcase the performance of the Snapdragon platform. The vehicle uses a central computing unit with 20 times the performance of the previous generation, it is further stated. Features such as contextual lane changes and hands-free driving on highways are intended to enhance comfort.

Communication Chip for V2X

The system in the iX3 uses a unified architecture that includes a variety of high-resolution 8-megapixel and 3-megapixel cameras as well as radar sensors. These are complemented by high-definition maps and precise GNSS localization. The model also features Qualcomm's V2X-200 chipset to enable communication between the vehicle and other devices (V2X).

The licensing structure is also interesting: Although BMW acted as a co-developer, Qualcomm can independently market the platform—to OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers.
