Sumitomo Riko develops and manufactures high-performance automotive components made from rubber. To ensure a safe and smooth drive, engineers need to understand the behavior of the various components within the system under extreme loads and stress factors. This requires conducting hundreds of multiphysics simulations, where preprocessing tasks such as defining geometric parameters for the model are very time-consuming and require specialized simulation knowledge.

How Does the AI-Driven Approach Work?

To accelerate product development, Sumitomo Riko uses Sim-AI and previously generated data to train AI models for components such as vibration dampers and hoses. Parameterizing the geometry is not required for this process. This approach delivers AI models capable of producing performance predictions in less than five minutes with an accuracy comparable to a high-precision simulation. This results in a time saving of over one hour for each new design.

How Much Time is Saved?

Initial tests showed, for example, that Sim-AI can accelerate simulation cycles for predicting the mechanical performance of certain rubber bushings—components that play a crucial role in reducing shocks and vibrations in suspension systems—by more than tenfold. This significant acceleration enables faster design iterations and more efficient workflows.

Sumitomo Riko is also collaborating with Ansys to implement workflow automation capabilities for product design, manufacturing, and decommissioning.

One of the biggest challenges in research and development is finding a balance between speed and accuracy in the early design phase. Ansys' AI capabilities enable lightning-fast predictions.

"Modern product development begins with high-quality data and leading simulation solutions," says Walt Hearn, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Customer Excellence at Ansys, part of Synopsys. "One of the biggest challenges in research and development is finding a balance between speed and accuracy in the early design phase. Ansys' AI capabilities enable lightning-fast predictions, regardless of how extensive or complex the calculations are. This allows customers to make data-driven decisions even before starting prototype development."
