With the opening of the restaurant concept Burgerbots in Los Gatos, California, ABB has demonstrated how automation is setting new standards in the hospitality industry. At the center, according to a statement, is a state-of-the-art robotic cell in which the Delta robot IRB 360 Flexpicker and the Cobot Yumi prepare a custom-made burger in just 27 seconds—hygienically, precisely, and fully automated. This is made possible by an intelligent system that monitors ingredients in real-time and seamlessly controls processes.

According to an ABB study, 89 percent of decision-makers in the hospitality industry are open to using robotics to automate tasks within their operations. Automation offers more than just efficiency: it provides relief in the "back-of-house" area and can make jobs more attractive in the long term.

Future Model for the Hospitality Industry

The compact robotic cell is a novelty in automated food preparation, as it seamlessly integrates two types of robots with an intelligent inventory monitoring system, it is further stated. With each order received, a freshly grilled burger patty is placed on a bun in a burger box. The box is then placed on a transport tray equipped with a QR code. As the tray moves on a conveyor belt, the IRB 360 Flexpicker adds the desired toppings according to the data stored in the QR code. Yumi then completes the burger. The entire process takes just 27 seconds per burger, according to the company.

The idea for Burgerbots came from entrepreneur Elizabeth Truong. She sees the robot-assisted kitchen not as a gimmick but as a model for the future: "I believe that in the next five years, most restaurants will have some form of robot-assisted automation, whether in back-of-house preparation, assembly, or even in front-of-house service."
