The "AI24" aims as Central Europe's first conference on application-oriented artificial intelligence (AI) to "bridge the gap between industry and science". Almost a bit of a tongue twister, but already in the mid-10s of this century, Dortmund's "logistics pope" put it aptly: "In the next decade, digitalization of everything and artificial intelligence in everything will change everything for all of us," so the credo of the recently awarded with the Dortmund Dialogue Prize former Fraunhofer IML head Prof. Dr. Michael ten Hompel. Now it apparently becomes reality, what has been worked on for many years. Digitization encompasses all areas of life and AI revolutionizes life and the economy in a way we could hardly imagine before. With large language models like Chat GPT and Transformer networks that generate texts, images, and videos of impressive quality, the future has long since arrived in the present.

Content-related questions in the AI competition

Europe, and Germany in particular, face the challenge of remaining competitive in AI research and application. The AI24, which is aimed at decision-makers from business and science as well as the AI community from all disciplines, is the first to address the status quo and strategic options of AI in Germany and Europe. The conference on application-oriented artificial intelligence in Central Europe is organised by the TU Dortmund and the Lamarr-Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The most important partner of the event is the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), which contributes its Future Logistics Congress. The venue is the Dortmund Exhibition Centre, which is organising the IN2AI exhibition in parallel, with AI providers and start-ups represented.

In a total of seven key areas, the conference organizers are rolling out the entire field of AI applications. Possibilities for the use of AI technologies in real application cases are discussed, such as how processes and networks can be controlled faster, more effectively and sustainably with AI, and the question of who can do it better—man or machine? Other topics include the business, ethical, and societal implications of AI, the legal framework for intelligent machines, and trust in AI. A special track is dedicated to AI education and training for future generations.

A highlight of the AI24, as it is called, is the evening event in the Phoenix of Lumière, organized by the Dortmund Economic Development Agency. The entry fee is 190 euros, the conference language is English (with translation). (bm)
