Webasto officially launched the new production line for high-tech glass at its plant in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg, on Saturday (21.9.). According to the company, the strategic product focus is on large-format panoramic glass roofs and forward-looking technologies such as switchable glazing and ambient lighting.

The expansion of capacity includes an extension of the production area by approximately 13,000 square meters as well as the integration of the latest manufacturing technologies. According to the announcement, the new facilities not only increase the efficiency and capacity of production but also enable significant energy savings. Webasto is using this opportunity to further modernize production and manufacture larger glass roof systems for cars in the highest quality.

Photovoltaic system reduces electricity costs

A central element of the investment is the installation of a photovoltaic system on the factory roof, which is expected to produce around 3.95 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually with a capacity of 4.5 megawatt-peak (MWp). Covering an area of about 20,000 m²—comparable to three football fields—the system should significantly contribute to reducing electricity consumption.

"With the investment in one of the world's most modern production lines for high-tech glass, Webasto is further expanding its innovative strength in the roofing systems sector," said Jan Henning Mehlfeldt, member of the board of Webasto. "Just two years after becoming part of Webasto, our plant in Grevenmacher is now ideally positioned to meet the growing demand for roofing systems with high-tech glass in the automotive industry."

60 new jobs

According to the announcement, the strategic investment in the site will create over 60 new jobs. The Grevenmacher production facility, which has been in operation since 1992 and became part of the Webasto Group in 2022, is now positioning itself as a center of competence for glass within the company. The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Economy, Lex Delles, and the Minister of the Interior of Luxembourg, Léon Gloden.
