Siemens, together with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, is digitizing the Pergamon Altar in the Pergamon Museum on Berlin's Museum Island (Germany). Starting in 2026, an AI-supported interactive 3D access will provide new perspectives on the monument, even before it becomes accessible to the public again in 2027.

The Pergamon Altar is one of the most significant works of Hellenistic art. The monument from the 2nd century BC is particularly renowned for its detailed Gigantomachy frieze and has been the centerpiece of the Pergamon Museum on Berlin's Museum Island since 1930, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations and will partially reopen from 2027.

In collaboration with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Siemens is digitizing the Pergamon Altar to create innovative mediation strategies. This includes a detailed 360-degree representation of the altar's two significant friezes:

  • Great frieze of the Gigantomachy: An over 360-ft-long and detailed relief band depicting the mythological battle between gods and giants.
  • Telephos frieze: This focuses on the founding saga of Pergamon and the history of the Attalids.

The digitization consists of hundreds of thousands of high-resolution images integrated into a three-dimensional immersive environment.

We turn digitization into a time machine and bring antiquity into the virtual world! Together with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, we are digitizing the Pergamon Altar, an impressive monument of human history. This way, world heritage becomes newly accessible: for everyone, anytime, and anywhere.

Virtual Exploration And Interactive Features

The emerging application uses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide personalized background information while enabling a photorealistic real-time environment where users can freely explore the World Heritage site. The real-time engine delivers highly detailed 3D graphics without delays.

Users have the opportunity to virtually circle the altar, examine mythological scenes in detail, and immerse themselves in the time of the monument's creation. Extensive information about the World Heritage site is easily accessible. Additionally, AI-powered avatars provide the possibility to engage in dialogue and gain information about the history of the Pergamon Altar.
