The manufacturing industry in the United States is increasingly investing in automation: the number of installations rose to a total of 44,303 units in 2023 - an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous year. The automotive industry is the leader, followed by the electrical and electronics industry. These are preliminary results from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

Sales in the automotive industry rose to a record of 14,678 installed robots in 2023 – an increase of 1 percent. The segment had already shown strong growth the year before: installations jumped by 47 percent to 14,472 units in 2022. In 2023, car and component manufacturers accounted for 33 percent of the market share of installed industrial robots. Internationally, the production volume of cars and light vehicles in the USA ranks second worldwide, behind China.

US electrical and electronics industry

Installations in the electrical and electronics industry rose by 37 percent to 5,120 units in 2023. The latest result accounts for a market share of 12 percent of installed industrial robots and nearly reaches the record level of the pre-pandemic period: in 2018, 5,284 units were installed.

In this segment, the demand for industrial robots is decisively influenced by the trend towards strengthening domestic supply chains and by projects that advance the energy transition.

The number of installations in other industries that exceed the 3,000-unit mark in the USA is: metal and mechanical engineering (4,123 units, +6 percent) and plastic and chemical products (3,213 units, +5 percent). They represent a market share of 9 percent and 7 percent respectively of industrial robot installations in 2023.

Industrial robots in Canada and Mexico

In Canada, the manufacturing sector installed a total of 4,616 industrial robots in 2023 – an increase of 43 percent. The automotive industry accounts for a market share of 55 percent. With 2,549 installed units, sales in the automotive industry rose by 99 percent in 2023, reaching an all-time high.

Robot installations in Mexico's manufacturing industry remained almost unchanged in 2023 with 5,868 units. The main customer is the automotive industry, which accounts for 69 percent of robot installations in 2023: sales totaled 4,068 units in 2023 (± 0 percent) – the third-best result since the peak of 4,805 units in 2017.
