According to Tesla, a new production facility is planned in Grünheide (Germany). The company aims to submit the second partial permit for the expansion by the end of the year. Tesla is reportedly already making internal preparations for this. However, it remains unclear how large the facility will be. At the site of Elon Musk’s only electric car factory in Europe, the company plans to double production from the previously planned 500,000 cars per year—a target that, as is well known, has not yet been reached—to one million per year. Storage capacity for battery cell production is also set to increase significantly there, with earlier plans calling for 100 gigawatt-hours per year in the future. This should reassure environmentalists: no additional forest will need to be cleared for this purpose.

Well Over 3,000 New Jobs Will Be Created

Tesla had not abandoned its expansion plans even during a slump in sales, but had initially put them on hold until market conditions improved. As is well known, demand is now picking up again, and Tesla is hiring employees despite the overall trend. According to Tesla, the factory near Berlin, which opened in March 2022, currently has 12,600 employees. At one point, the number had fallen below 11,000 employees. The company plans to increase production in two phases to a final rate of 7,500 vehicles per week, it added. That corresponds to approximately 375,000 vehicles per year. To achieve this, 2,000 new employees are to be hired. In addition, over 1,500 new employees are planned for the expansion of battery cell production. According to the report, 2,000 additional employees have already been hired in recent months.
