Just three years old, the Singapore-based company Silicon Box is not shy about making big moves. Together with the Italian government, Silicon Box is investing in a location in Northern Italy for a semiconductor manufacturing and testing facility to offer advanced packaging solutions on European soil.

The semiconductor industry's enthusiasm for miniaturization and stacking ensures that components become smaller and more complex on the one hand, and more powerful on the other. For applications such as Artificial Intelligence and High Performance Computing (HPC), innovations are needed like on an assembly line to drive the computing power of the technologies to a maximum, while also keeping topics like energy efficiency in focus. For these reasons, advanced packaging solutions for semiconductors have now become indispensable.

The company Silicon Box in Singapore offers such advanced packaging processes, and soon also in Europe. On March 11, 2024, they reached an agreement with the Italian government to jointly invest in a semiconductor manufacturing and testing site in Northern Italy. According to its own statements, Silicon Box plans to allocate around 3.2 billion euros for the project. A decision from the European Commission is still pending on whether the Italian government may subsidize the project. Until the approval is granted, the factory will be outlined on paper only.

At least 1,600 jobs in the foundry

The executives of Silicon Box expect the plant to meet the demand for advanced packaging capacities for next-generation technologies anticipated by 2028. First, advanced packaging solutions will be made available, followed by further expansion towards 3D integration and testing. The factory in Northern Italy alone is expected to create up to 1,600 jobs. According to Silicon Box, the location also offers an optimal opportunity for cooperation with the already existing and planned European semiconductor clusters in Italy, Germany, and France. The geographical proximity can foster partnerships from the design phase to final manufacturing, strengthening the resilience and efficiency of the European and global semiconductor supply chain.
