“Service robots are increasingly being used in day-to-day operations,” says Jane Heffner, president of the International Federation of Robotics. “Sales rose in all three segments with double-digit growth rates: professional service robots saw a 24 percent increase, medical robots a 19 percent increase, and consumer service robots an impressive 37 percent increase.”

Transportation and Logistics will remain the leading application area in 2025, with 117,500 units sold. This represents a 21 percent increase and a market share of 47 percent. These robots are primarily used for transportation and the automation of goods flows and delivery processes. Although traditional sales remain the most important monetization channel, demand for Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) business models is growing. In the U.S., this is already the predominant business model.

The second-most important area of application is robots in the hotel and hospitality industry. These robots are primarily used as mobile assistants for providing information and enabling telepresence in public spaces. The market for professional cleaning robots ranks third. The primary application in this segment is floor cleaning.

Humanoid robots, which are designed to resemble humans and are used in environments designed for humans, are generating a great deal of excitement due to their potential flexibility. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, sensor technology, and control systems have led to impressive pilot projects. However, current applications are mostly still highly specialized and often require remote control by humans. In 2025, a total of approximately 7,000 units of so-called full-size humanoids (over 140 cm / 4 feet 7 inches) were sold worldwide. These robots are intended for commercial and professional applications outside of research and development and the entertainment industry.

Challenges related to safety standards, high AI training and maintenance costs, and the lack of a compelling business model—particularly in industrial settings—continue to limit widespread adoption. To develop humanoid robots into practical everyday tools, further progress in the areas of intuitive programming, robust handling, economic scalability, and standardized safety is essential.

Service robots for personal use are primarily produced as household robots for the mass market. Sales rose by 37 percent in 2025 to nearly 34.2 million units. Key trends in this segment include the automation of household tasks, the integration of artificial intelligence, and connectivity with smart-home systems.

Surgical robots are the key growth driver in the medical robotics market, with 8,400 units sold and a growth rate of 57 percent. This strong performance reflects their increasing use in clinical practice. The transition from technological development to commercial success has been gaining significant momentum over the past ten years. Advances in robotics, improved clinical outcomes, and growing acceptance among healthcare professionals are key factors driving this market development.
