The Siemens plant in Nanjing has been recognized as a lighthouse factory by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and included in the Global Lighthouse Network. According to a press release, the WEF recognized the extensive use of digital twins and AI applications that have enabled the site to achieve exceptional progress in productivity, quality and sustainability.

In the productivity category, the "Digital Native Factory" impressed the jury with its consistent data-driven transformation of production. The production site responds to highly variable customer requirements that require the lines to be reconfigured every four weeks, while at the same time drastically shortening delivery windows. To master this complexity, Siemens is relying on a digital excellence strategy with modular automation, manufacturing operations management systems and more than 50 AI applications.

The results are measurable: compared to 2022, throughput times fell by 78%, time to market was reduced by 33% and productivity increased by 14% by 2024. At the same time, field failures were reduced by 46% and direct and energy-related CO₂ emissions by 28%. Improvements in plant utilization, employee training and resource management were also included in the assessment.

Nanjing is Siemens' largest research and production center for CNC systems, drives and electric motors outside Germany and already the fifth Siemens location with lighthouse status.
