Siemens links Industrial Edge with Snowflake's AI Data Cloud. Manufacturers combine OT data from machines with IT information such as supply chain and finance, apply AI to both, and bridge gaps between the shop floor and ERP.

The partnership targets data silos. Siemens consolidates data directly at the edge, contextualizes it, and transfers it in a controlled manner to IT systems. Snowflake provides the platform to securely share this information and analyze it with generative AI – up to agent-based applications. "This collaboration combines the best of both worlds," says Rainer Brehm, CEO of Factory Automation at Siemens.

"Siemens has extensive expertise in directly integrating the OT and IT worlds on the shop floor, while Snowflake is a leader in managing and analyzing large amounts of OT and IT data. Together, we enable our customers to bridge the gap between IT and OT and scale their digital transformation across machines, production lines, and entire plants."

This is How the Connection Works

Manufacturers access data sources such as PLCs, sensors, and existing production systems via industrial edge apps in plug-and-play mode. Processing takes place at the edge, including OT and AI models in a closed control loop with automation. The enriched data is then transferred to Snowflake's AI Data Cloud. There, teams orchestrate analyses, share data along the value chain, and develop AI workflows.

First Implementation with FFT

FFT integrates manufacturing data into the cloud as an integrator: The in-house DataBridge app transfers production data into Snowflake's environment. The solution is already running on its own lines, while FFT also acts as a Snowflake partner and a Siemens Xcelerator partner.

The goal is clear: greater transparency in the factory, more reliable metrics, and room to specifically improve maintenance, quality, and output. However, clean data models, clear governance, and responsibilities between OT and IT remain crucial. Without these foundations, convergence remains a promise. With them, the coupling of Industrial Edge and AI Data Cloud can significantly bridge the gap between machine and management. (mc)
