The car manufacturer MG, which belongs to the state-owned conglomerate SAIC, plans to offer electric cars under the new brand IM in Europe from next year. As the company announced on Wednesday, the first model, the mid-sized sedan IM L6, is set to make its debut next week at the Geneva Motor Show.

IM stands for "Intelligent Mobility". Under this brand, MG will offer purely electrically driven vehicles "that demonstrate new technological perspectives and stand for an exceptional driving experience," the announcement states. At launch, the focus will be on sedans and SUVs.

Few technical details

The IM models are expected to be equipped with advanced assistance systems and offer intelligent and connected services. The IM L6 is supposed to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just under three seconds. Depending on the model variant, the car is expected to be available to order with either lithium-ion or solid-state batteries. MG promises ranges of more than 600 or 800 kilometers. The manufacturer has not yet revealed further details about the vehicles.

The MG parent company SAIC founded IM Motors in China in 2020 with participation from the tech giant Alibaba. In the home market, the OEM offers three models: the sedan L7, as well as the two SUVs LS6 and LS7.

In addition to the IM L6, MG will showcase a new subcompact car in Geneva: The MG 3, however, will not come to market as a battery electric vehicle. Instead, the Polo and Corsa competitor will feature a hybrid drive.
