Log data makes production more resilient

However, forward-thinking manufacturers could use advanced tools to increase productivity while ensuring compliance. Security data can be used to monitor operations, mitigate risks and turn cyber security into a competitive advantage. For example, IoT devices generate log data that tracks access, frequency of access and compliance with approved procedures on networks. This data maintains device and network security and is therefore crucial. But it also provides insights into operational efficiency, such as the frequency of remote access by technicians or the number of weekly device interruptions. Log data can also highlight patterns in new product registration and geographical differences. This information is of high business value and allows processes to be streamlined to drive growth.

Improve operational efficiency exponentially

The data collected by cybersecurity tools such as SIEM (Security Information & Event Management) feeds into the areas of security and compliance, which are essential for performance and availability management. Looking at cyber security as just a cost overlooks its additional value beyond cyber resilience. However, capabilities such as SIEM capture data that provides greater insight into operations and system communications. By centralizing log management, these tools can aggregate data from multiple sources to ensure continuous monitoring of industrial processes and systems. With advanced analytics and machine learning (ML), they can detect potential security threats and anomalies.

And hyperconnectivity offers many advantages for manufacturing. Real-time data exchange between systems, machines and processes, for example, improves operational efficiency exponentially, as Graylog emphasizes. Transparency contributes to better coordination between manufacturers, suppliers and distributors and creates a "smarter" and more flexible manufacturing environment. However, the experts note that the sector is only as good as its service, which must be fast, precise and risk-free.
