The number of onboard electrical systems and functions continues to increase with the growing electrification in the automotive industry. This leads to a rising demand for primary LDOs, which can directly convert the battery voltage for MCUs and other components used in control units. However, the energy supplied by the vehicle's lead-acid battery and generator is often subject to sudden voltage fluctuations. Primary LDOs offer stable output voltages even under these conditions.

Mastering load current fluctuations

At the same time, control units and other downstream components often experience load current fluctuations during operation, requiring excellent load transient response. A high bandwidth of the error amplifier is essential for rapid recovery of the output voltage. However, ensuring sufficient phase margin for stable operation has been challenging. Therefore, Rohm has developed a new solution to address these challenges.

QuiCur technology

The BD9xxM5-C series is equipped with proprietary QuiCur technology, which, according to the manufacturer, provides excellent responsiveness to load current fluctuations. QuiCur stands for Quick-Current High-Speed Load Regulation Circuit. For example, the LDO can maintain the output voltage within 100 mV of the set voltage even when the load changes between 0 and 500 mA within 1 µs (rise/fall time). Furthermore, the low current consumption of 9.5 µA (typ.) reduces power consumption in automotive applications. The new products will be available in four packages, ranging from the compact HTSOP-J8 to the TO252 (TO252-3/TO252-5) and HRP5 models with high heat dissipation. The series meets the basic requirements for automotive products, including operation at 150 °C and qualification according to the AEC-Q100 standard for automotive reliability.

Application examples

The LDO regulators are suitable for a variety of automotive applications, for example, for control units that are operated with the vehicle's primary power supply system.

  • Powertrain: Fuel injection, tire pressure monitoring system

  • Body systems: Body control modules

  • Infotainment: Gauges, Head-Up Displays (HUDs)
