Hürsan Pres's requirements for a new press were clear: lower energy consumption, repeat accuracy, noise reduction and a new drive system. A powerful servo drive system was required and Baumüller provided an efficient system with high pressing force and precise pressure and flow control.

The new "Servo" press was to meet the increasing demand for higher precision and lower energy consumption, and a more innovative drive system was needed. Everything else, including the head control, was to remain with the previous supplier. The Turkish manufacturer Hürsan Pres was therefore looking for a new drive solution and a partner with a powerful servo drive system and application expertise in metal forming.
For its new press, Hürsan Pres relied on an efficient drive system from Baumüller for the first time. The servo-hydraulic solution for the 440 short tons machine consists of the dynamic DSD2 servo motor series, the servo drive b Maxx 5500 and the servo-hydraulic software module integrated in the converter.

Servohydraulics: Energy-Saving Pressure And Volume Flow Control
The new Servo combines all the advantages of hydraulic presses, such as high pressing forces and flexibility, and also offers optimization in terms of cycle time, repeat accuracy, energy consumption and environmental compatibility thanks to the powerful motor-pump combinations from Baumüller.
The high energy efficiency of the servo-hydraulic solution is the result of demand-driven pump performance. When the press is at a standstill, the motors are also at rest and do not consume any energy.

With the servo pump, Baumüller combines the advantages of hydraulic power transmission with the benefits of electric servo drive technology. Servo pump drives for the hydraulic supply consist of a fixed displacement pump driven by a servo motor. By changing the motor speed in a highly dynamic manner, the quantity and pressure can be precisely controlled. As the servo pump only provides power when it is actually being used, the machine consumes much less energy. The energy-saving potential of Baumüller's servo hydraulics is therefore particularly evident during breaks in the process.
High-Performance Drive Solutions for More Power And Energy Efficiency
The servo press uses the DSD2 servo motors from Baumüller. The series offers very low moments of inertia to provide the necessary dynamics for precise pressure control during the forming process. Thanks to the various shaft and flange options, the hydraulic pumps can be attached directly to the servomotors. The elimination of the coupling and bellhousing reduces the overall length, noise emissions during operation and installation time. It is also possible to distribute the pressing power to several motors, which are connected via a master-slave coupling.
Intelligent servo drives b Maxx
Intelligence in the drive means that functions that traditionally took place in the central control system are now located in the servo drive. This is also the case with servo hydraulics, for example. The software with all the functionalities for operating the servo-hydraulic system is integrated directly on the Softdrive PLC in the b Maxx servo inverter.
Independent of the Control Unit: Intelligence Lies in the Drive
At Baumüller, the entire servo-hydraulic system is a drive-based solution. This means that the software with all functionalities is integrated directly into the b-Maxx servo converter. This is where the pressure and volume flow is regulated and numerous other functions, such as pump monitoring, are controlled. The switch to a Baumüller drive system is therefore independent of the central PLC and can be combined with the products of various control system providers. This means that the requirements for the central control system do not change when switching from a standard motor to a controlled servomotor. The interfaces for connecting to the machine remain the same. The implementation of the system is manufacturer-independent and possible with a wide variety of controller types.
A clear advantage for Hürsan Pres, which is using a different manufacturer for the head control for the new press. For example, the Baumüller drives can be supplied with the fieldbus option for Profinet. Baumüller also has motion control libraries for Siemens and other manufacturers in its range; this makes connecting the drive system to a Siemens PLC extremely easy.
With the b-Maxx servo inverters, Baumüller offers suitable servo drives for high performance classes. They have compact installation dimensions and offer a wide and scalable selection of optional safety functions. The devices also have the option of energy recovery.
In order to provide the high volume flows required for servo-hydraulic presses, motors with very high outputs are needed. Master-slave systems for load sharing are therefore often predestined for this application. Baumüller drives offer very flexible connection methods for finding the most suitable solution.
Partnership from Specifications to Acceptance
As an international company with a competent product development team, Hürsan Pres places the highest demands on its suppliers. A dynamic company was therefore sought to support Hürsan's approach and jointly develop the machine portfolio.
Baumüller is a medium-sized company with over 40 locations worldwide, whose drive systems with highly dynamic and precise servo technology ensure maximum efficiency in operation. The drive manufacturer can react flexibly to customer requirements on the basis of a comprehensive hardware and software modular system—a perfect partner for Hürsan to master challenging projects and future technologies.

Before the project started, the basic parameters such as the peak torque and the maximum required speed of the motor were clarified. The next step was to define the most suitable drive system and then to adapt the components, including the servo-hydraulic software package, to the needs of Hürsan Pres. Özgür Deniz Demirbaş, Country Manager at Baumüller Turkey, emphasized that Baumüller worked closely and in very good coordination with Hürsan in every phase of the project.
And the result is impressive: The new "Servo" press forms with high pressing force in combination with low energy consumption and precise pressure and flow control. The response was extremely positive, with the result that a follow-up order for an even larger press was placed shortly after the premiere.
Innovation Through Trusting Cooperation
Mehmet Sari, Export Sales Manager at Hürsan Pres, is very satisfied with the cooperation: "With the help of the service and application team from Baumüller Turkey, the many years of experience and expertise in drive technology was combined with our specialist knowledge in metalworking. In addition to on-site support, we were also able to draw on the broad application know-how from Baumüller's central application and industry management. We work together with Baumüller on a very cooperative basis. Partnership means that we actively look for solutions together and also benefit from short communication channels."
Lower energy consumption, repeat accuracy, noise reduction and also an innovative drive system: these numerous requirements could be combined in one press using a servo-hydraulic drive. And the switch to a new type of drive was much easier than expected thanks to drive-based servo hydraulics.
