The "Business and Strategy" update from car manufacturer Polestar has good news for the e-car sector in Europe. The Polestar 7, a model that falls into the popular premium compact SUV class, is to be manufactured in Europe. In addition, the "Polestar Energy" service is also intended to reduce charging costs for customers.

Polestar, the Swedish e-car manufacturer and subsidiary of Volvo and Geely, published a "Business and Strategy" update on January 16, 2025, which contains some interesting details. In addition to the development of the French e-car market, the expansion of the stationary Polestar contact points and the pooling of EU CO₂ credits with four OEMs, the focus is on the "Polestar Energy" service.

Polestar Energy will be available in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland when the service launches. The service is designed to make charging electric cars at home smarter, more efficient and more cost-effective.

"With the service, customers can reduce their home charging costs by up to 30 percent by using the Polestar Energy app. The more Polestar customers charge via Polestar Energy and support the grid, the more benefits they will receive. The service will be launched in several additional markets in the second half of the year, with the introduction of bi-directional charging options to Polestar's product range making the offer even more attractive," it explains.

Polestar 7 with production in Europe

Polestar already manufactures its models in the USA, Korea and China. In the future, a further production site is to be added in Europe, presumably to be able to serve fast-growing e-mobility markets such as France and Belgium more regionally. Philipp Römers, Head of Design at Polestar, announced as part of the update that the Polestar 7 will be manufactured in Europe.

The Polestar 7, on the other hand, is a model that belongs to the premium compact SUV class. This, in turn, is only a logical decision, as the market share of electric premium compact SUVs in Europe in 2024 was between 30 and 40 percent in many cases, according to manufacturers (such as BMW, Skoda and Mercedes-Benz). Polestar clearly also wants to leverage this potential. (sb)
