Chip manufacturer AMD is reportedly set to supply chips with a total power consumption of six gigawatts for "OpenAI" data centers. The semiconductor manufacturer will begin deliveries in the second half of 2026. The partnership is expected to generate revenues of tens of billions of dollars for AMD, while simultaneously accelerating the expansion of "OpenAI's" AI infrastructure. As a result, AMD shares jumped by over a quarter in pre-market U.S. trading (to $208). As part of the partnership, AMD is also offering 160 million of its own shares. Based on the pre-market stock price, the deal with the shares would be worth over $33 billion. However, the issuance of the shares is tied to certain conditions and the achievement of milestones.

The AI Hype Makes Chip Manufacturers Happy

Recently, AMD's rival and fellow chip giant Nvidia also announced investment plans of up to $100 billion in "OpenAI," for which the latter sources chips from Nvidia. AMD has so far struggled to keep up with the stock market heavyweight Nvidia in the highly lucrative AI chip sector. AMD's market value—based on the most recent closing price—stood at just over $267 billion. However, Nvidia's valuation soared to nearly $4.6 trillion in recent years with the AI hype, making it currently the most valuable company in the world. In addition to graphics processing chips particularly suited for AI applications, AMD also offers CPU processors.
