Companies today are faced with the challenge of driving forward environmental responsibility and digital innovation at the same time. In practice, this means improving carbon footprints, using resources more efficiently and digitizing processes, products and business models at the same time. This 'dual transformation' is not an additional line of action, but a holistic change that combines technological, organizational and cultural aspects.

Strategically Dovetailing Digitalization And Sustainability

The it's OWL project DualStrat—Strategic Management of Dual Transformation—is developing practice-oriented methods and tools for this purpose. The aim is to enable companies to strategically interlink digitalization and sustainability and thus build long-term competitiveness. The Quick Check is one of these tools and makes it easy to get started.

Six Subject Areas, Four Maturity Levels

The tool is based on a maturity model with four levels, from unstructured to co-designed, and asks specific questions on the following topics:

Purpose, vision & mission: How clear is the strategic focus on digital and sustainable goals?
Products & services: To what extent are sustainability and digitalization aspects taken into account in development?
Value creation processes: How efficient, data-based and resource-conserving are production and supply chains?
Goals & management: Are there key figures, responsibilities and control mechanisms for the transformation?
People & organization: How well are employees and managers involved in the change?
Stakeholders & ecosystem: How are customers, partners and other players involved in the transformation?

How Companies Benefit from the Quick Check

After completing the online survey, companies receive an individual evaluation as a PDF that shows the level of maturity in each topic area and derives recommendations for action. The results can be used internally—for example for strategy workshops, sustainability reports or digital roadmaps.

The tool is a low-threshold introduction, especially for SMEs that are still at the beginning of the dual transformation. It helps to set priorities, clarify responsibilities and create a common understanding within the company.
