The EU plans to build six more large AI factories in Europe, which are to be established in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the Netherlands. These will enable start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as industry to directly access supercomputers with artificial intelligence, according to further reports. To achieve this, the EU member states, along with €500 Million / $578 Million the EU, are investing over . The EU aims to catch up in the field of AI and reduce technological dependencies, as the USA is considered a market leader and China also plays a pioneering role. There is also talk of relatively large AI factories supported by the EU—so-called gigafactories. However, a decision has not yet been made regarding these. In terms of Germany, it has been reported that Telekom, the cloud provider Ionos, and the IT subsidiary of the Schwarz Group (Lidl, Kaufland) have expressed interest. On the other hand, the contract for an AI factory was already awarded last year for the "HammerHai" AI project in Stuttgart, Germany. In total, the EU has so far selected 19 locations for AI factories.
