The speed and level of automation of modern laser cutting machines increase every year. This continuously enhances the efficiency of these CNC machines. However, the processes in the "office" are often neglected. In many companies, manual calculation and offer preparation are still the standard. Yet, there is enormous potential in these processes: By optimizing or automating these workflows, capacities are freed up that can be profitably used either at the machine or with the customer.

A prime example of a modern laser cutting operation is Pretec Schneidtechnologien GmbH from Dresden (Germany). Automation has been prioritized there from an early stage. As early as 2007, all laser systems were equipped with automatic loading systems and connected to a high-bay storage system with over 700 material slots. This enables continuous production in a three-shift system.

Online calculation of sheet metal parts through CAD upload

Another major step has now been taken: the introduction of an online calculator for sheet metal parts. "With the new online calculator, our customers can now receive prices for their individual laser and sheet metal bending parts within seconds," explains Dr. Steffen Albrecht, Managing Director of Pretec Laserschneidtechnologien GmbH.

The cad2calc sheet metal part calculator from Automate-Me GmbH is used, which has been precisely tailored to the needs of the sheet metal manufacturer. The calculation is based on the same formulas and results as the previous Excel-based calculation. Additionally, the specific laser parameters from Pretec have been integrated, ensuring that the cutting time calculation accurately matches the company's own machines.

With the calculator, users can upload up to 15 drawings simultaneously. In a clear presentation, the parts can then be quickly and easily configured, whether it's a simple laser part in DXF format or a complex bent part as a STEP file. The drawings are analyzed and calculated within seconds.

Automatic data transfer to production control

Thanks to the direct connection to Oseon by Trumpf, new customers are automatically created, and the positions on the order confirmation are directly transferred from the online shop to the ERP system. Thanks to this automatic data transfer, manual typing of address and order data is eliminated. Regular customers can even order online directly with their existing customer number. To enable this, Automate-Me has developed a new XML interface, precisely tailored to Pretec's requirements. This ensures the data integrates seamlessly into the IT process chain.
