Micron will begin construction of its megafab in New York on January 16, 2026. The project, worth up to $100 billion, is considered the largest semiconductor investment in U.S. history.

Micron Technology has announced the official groundbreaking for its new megafactory in the U.S. state of New York. The groundbreaking is scheduled for January 16, 2026, following the completion of environmental reviews and the issuance of all required permits.

The facility is located in Onondaga County near Syracuse. An industrial complex with up to four semiconductor factories is to be gradually built there. Micron estimates the total investment at around $100 billion, spread over several decades.

According to the company, this is the largest private investment in the history of the state of New York. The megafab is designed for the production of advanced memory chips, which are primarily intended for use in data centers and AI systems.

Production Start Earliest in the 2030s

However, short-term production is not expected. Industry insiders estimate that the first factory could begin operations at the earliest by the end of the decade, around 2030. The full expansion of all planned fabs could extend into the 2040s.

The project is part of a broader investment program by Micron. Overall, the company plans to spend around $200 billion, including approximately $150 billion for memory production in the U.S. and another $50 billion for research and development. In this context, tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs are expected.

The financing will not rely solely on its own funds. Public subsidies, including those under the U.S. CHIPS Act, are part of the plan. Representatives of the federal government, Congress, and the New York State government are therefore expected to attend the groundbreaking. (sg)
