The CLA Shooting Brake features the same technology as the four-door model but offers more storage space and, in our opinion, has a clear visual edge. The question of price remains.

With the new CLA (starting at 56,800 euros, approx. 67,000 USD), already available for order for a few weeks, Mercedes aims to usher in a new era in the field of electromobility. The four-door sedan, which will also be available at a later date with a 48-volt onboard system (mild hybrid), is the first vehicle in the group to feature 800-volt technology and is built on the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform. Thanks to a low drag coefficient (cW) and additional efficiency measures, it is expected to achieve ranges of over 700 kilometers (approx. 435 miles) depending on the engine configuration and usage.

This also applies in a similar way to the second body variant, the newly introduced Shooting Brake, a type of wagon with a significantly sloping roofline towards the rear. Visually, it is not dissimilar to the CLA Shooting Brake introduced in 2015. This version not only offers a sportier look compared to the sedan but also provides more storage space in the rear, with 455 to 1,200 liters. Although this is 30 and 60 liters less volume, respectively, than its predecessor, the electric version features a front trunk (frunk) with approximately 100 liters of storage space—ideal for storing charging cables and small items.

Two Drive Variants

Both electric motors can also be ordered for the Shooting Brake. As the 250+ with rear-wheel drive, the new Mercedes delivers 200 kW. As the 350 with all-wheel drive, it offers 260 kW. Both variants are powered by a nickel-manganese battery with a usable energy capacity of 85 kWh, providing ranges of up to 760 km (250+, approx. 472 miles) and 730 km (350, appros. 454 miles), respectively. Additionally, the CLA allows its owners to tow up to 1,800 kilograms (braked)—an uncommon feature in this class. The wheelbase, like that of the sedan, measures 2.79 meters (approx. 9.15 ft), a full six centimeters (approx. 2.4 inches) longer than the previous CLA.

Prices for Combustion and Electric Variants

A version with a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery will be introduced later, which will lower the entry price. It will become even more affordable with the planned mild-hybrid gasoline engines, available in three power variants: 100 kW/136 hp, 120 kW/163 hp, and 140 kW/190 hp, plus an additional 20 kW from the 48-volt onboard system. The base price for the smallest mild hybrid starts at 46,500 euros (approx. 54,700 USD) for the sedan.

Mercedes has not yet announced prices for the 4.72-meter-long (approx. 15,5 ft) Shooting Brake, but compared to the sedan, there is likely to be a "lifestyle and practicality surcharge," which we speculatively estimate at 1,000 euros (approx. 1,180 USD). The premium estate would then start at around 58,000 euros (approx. 68,000 USD) as an electric car and 47,500 euros (approx. 56,000 USD) as a mild hybrid.
