Mazda is gradually advancing into the premium segment: The CX-60, as the brand's first plug-in hybrid, is another building block for this—as the manufacturer's most powerful production model.

The new CX-60 marked the entry into the premium segment in 2022—and with several premieres at that. For the first time, the Japanese combine a plug-in hybrid drive with a new longitudinal engine platform.

The result is convincing. A long hood, short rear, and classic proportions characterize the lines. Under the sheet metal lies the latest technology: a 2.5-liter gasoline engine works hand in hand with a powerful electric motor. Together, they develop 327 hp and a massive 500 Newton meters of torque. A newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission distributes the power to all four wheels. This makes the CX-60 the strongest production model of the brand.

Efficient electric performance

The 17.8 kWh battery allows for 63 kilometers (approx. 40,4 miles) of electric range according to WLTP. Purely electrically, a speed of 140 (approx. 87 mph) is possible. At the wallbox, the CX-60 charges with 7.2 kW in two and a half hours. The consumption is 1.6 liters of gasoline and 23 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers (approx. 62 miles).

The interior shows true premium quality. The tested Homura trim spoils with black leather and climate-controlled seats. The electrically adjustable steering wheel can be perfectly adapted. Particularly clever: A camera recognizes the driver. Seat, steering wheel, and mirrors immediately adjust to the stored positions.

Digital cockpit with proven controls

Two 12.3-inch displays dominate the cockpit. They show instruments and infotainment in razor-sharp resolution. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now connect wirelessly. Control is classic via a rotary-push controller. This saves the touch screen acrobatics while driving.

The assistance systems work attentively in the background. The adaptive cruise control reliably maintains distance. The lane-keeping assistant intervenes gently. A 360-degree camera system makes maneuvering easier.

Space giant with practical talents

At 4.75 meters in length (approx. 15,6 ft), the CX-60 offers princely space. Passengers enjoy generous head and legroom both front and rear. The trunk holds 570 liters. With the rear seats folded down, the volume grows to 1,726 liters. The optional 230-volt socket in the back provides a powerful 1,500 watts.

The chassis shows two faces. In comfort mode, the CX-60 glides smoothly over the road. The sport mode noticeably tightens the tuning. Thanks to a low center of gravity due to the battery in the underbody, the heavy SUV remains surprisingly agile.

Upscale equipment at a fair price

Our test vehicle in Homura trim costs 56,350 euros (58.604 USD). With the Convenience & Sound package, panoramic roof, and Soul Red paint, the price rises to 61,550 euros (64.012 USD). The equipment is impressive: matrix LED lighting, premium sound from Bose, and an electric glass sunroof are included.

The CX-60 proves: Japanese craftsmanship and hybrid technology fit together perfectly. Mazda has created a characterful premium SUV.

New for the 2025 model year

For the 2025 model year, there is a suspension update: The rear suspension gets softer springs, firmer dampers, and greater travel. Mazda promises reduced pitch movement and an overall more comfortable ride. Changes to the geometry and damping at the front axle aim to provide more driving stability and steering precision.

In addition, the equipment program is being revised. For the previously offered Homura level, there will be a black Nappa leather interior, a vinyl leather cover for the dashboard, and trim inserts in a gun-metal finish. New are the fully equipped top versions Homura Plus and Takumi Plus (each from €62,850 (65.364 USD)), which offer additional details like the panoramic glass sunroof and a Convenience & Sound package on top of the Homura and Takumi levels.

Drive range unchanged, prices increased

As before, the CX-60 is available with a 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel in power levels of 147 kW/200 hp and 187 kW/254 hp, as well as a plug-in hybrid with 241 kW/327 hp of system output and 63 kilometers (approx. 39 miles) of purely electric range. The PHEV version marks the financial entry into the series at just under 49,000 euros (50.960 USD). The diesels start at 51,000 and 56,000 euros (53.040 and 58.240 USD), respectively.
