MAN has completed the winter tests with the all-electric Lion's Coach E. The tests took place in northern Sweden near the Arctic Circle and in Erzurum, Turkey, almost 560 miles east of Ankara. Two regions that are known for their harsh winters. In total, four electric coaches covered several thousand electric test kilometers. Temperatures were as low as −22°F in some places.

The focus was primarily on the behavior of the high-voltage battery system, the energy management including preconditioning and charging performance, the drivetrain with electric motor—and the thermal management of the interior. Barbaros Oktay, Head of the Bus Division at MAN, expressed his satisfaction in a press release: "Even in these icy temperatures, the Lion's Coach E fully met our expectations. All components and systems worked reliably despite the cold."

Nine Buses in Winter Testing

Hundreds of sensors recorded data during the journeys: on temperatures, pressure values, energy flows and system statuses. MAN had a total of nine buses in the winter test. In addition to the four Lion's Coach E, conventional coaches and city and intercity models with purely electric and hybrid drives rolled through the winter landscapes. "The successful debut of the Lion's Coach E shows that electromobility can be implemented reliably and economically in coach transport, even under extreme conditions," summarized Roland Scharl, Head of Engineering Bus.

First All-Electric Coach from MAN

The "Lion's Coach 14 E" is the first battery-electric coach from MAN. The drive comes from the series-produced e-truck. The energy is stored in NMC battery packs. MAN manufactures these at its Nuremberg (Germany) plant. The Lion's Coach E can use between 320 and 480 kilowatt hours. According to the manufacturer, this allows the bus to travel up to 400 miles under optimal conditions.

The bus can accommodate up to 63 passengers. There are no restrictions in terms of luggage volume compared to the diesel model. MAN is currently testing the bus and preparing for production in Ankara, Turkey. Some customers should receive the first models before the end of this year.
