The British government is now investing in its nuclear submarine fleet, which is also expected to create around 1,000 jobs and boost the economy. This includes a deal for nuclear submarine reactors worth nine billion pounds (about 10.67 billion euros or 11.05 billion USD), to be supplied by engine manufacturer Rolls Royce. According to the London Ministry of Defence, the eight-year contract includes the development, manufacture, and maintenance of the nuclear reactors. In addition, it is expected to secure around 4,000 existing jobs in the UK.

Nuclear deterrence as the ultimate safeguard

Defense Secretary John Healey commented to the British news agency PA that the agreement shows defense can be used as a driver for growth. It is also a commitment to the country's nuclear deterrent as the ultimate insurance in a more dangerous world. (However, this increasingly sounds like a revival of the Cold War.) Britain operates a fleet of four submarines, which are both nuclear-powered and armed with nuclear weapons. One of these submarines is permanently on patrol in the world's oceans to respond with force to a nuclear attack on Britain.
