Leuze's 3D radar system LBK reliably detects people even in the presence of dust, smoke, or sparks. Now, the controller is available with an integrated CIP Safety interface for Ethernet/IP—alternatively, variants with Profisafe or FSoE are also available.

In many production facilities, machines must safely stop even under challenging conditions and only restart when no one is in the danger zone. Optical sensors reach their limits with welding smoke, wood dust, or shavings. This is where the 3D radar LBK shows its strengths: it detects people regardless of contamination and ambient light, reporting both access and presence.

Unlike traditional light curtains or laser scanners, radar technology allows pallets, containers, or other static objects in the monitored area without triggering the safety signal. Thanks to the 3D principle, the system also monitors zones on steps and plinths as well as areas behind non-metallic obstructions. This reduces false triggers and minimizes downtime.

CIP Safety for Ethernet/IP

The core of the system is a separate controller, now also available with an integrated CIP Safety interface. CIP Safety ("Common Industrial Protocol Safety") extends the widely used CIP protocol with a secure transmission layer and enables standardized integration into Ethernet/IP-based safety networks. For those using other fieldbuses, LBK can be connected via controller variants with Profisafe or FSoE.

Commissioning remains straightforward: With the LBK Designer configuration software, operators can adjust lobes, warning and protection fields, and system parameters to their application. In addition to cable-based parameterization, an SD memory card can be used to upload and backup configurations. This allows settings to be documented and reproduced if needed.

Scalable up to 24 Sensors

For large or intricate areas, a controller connects up to six sensors, thereby covering expansive zones. Four channel configurations per controller allow for the use of up to 24 sensors in a single application. Operators define the number and position of the sensors and configure the length, opening angle, and width of the monitored area. This makes LBK adaptable for applications ranging from machine front zones to safeguarding transfer stations.

LBK is suitable for monitoring non-visible workspaces in and in front of machines, for restart prevention, and for access protection at material transfer points. On travel paths of transfer carts, AGVs, or cranes, the system operates with adjustable lobes for warning and protection zones. Ambient light or reflective surfaces along the route do not cause false triggers, as the system specifically detects people. For planning and commissioning, Leuze offers support from certified safety experts upon request. (mc)
