Alba Niedersachsen-Anhalt GmbH is part of the nationally active Alba Group and offers its public and commercial customers a complete range of waste disposal services, as Sensolus states. It is also responsible for the Stendal district, which covers a very large area of over 2,400 square kilometers with a low population density. Overall, the recycler has about a thousand containers in stock, distributed across approximately 370 public and 10 commercial sites. Given the long distances that need to be covered, it is essential to organize transportation, use, and emptying as efficiently as possible, the report continues. A major challenge is knowing exactly where each container is located and what their fill levels would be. Alba would prefer to overview the locations, dwell times, and movement of its containers with just one glance at a map.

Robust trackers are easy to install

Sensolus' IoT-based trackers eventually won the selection process. Alba proceeded with the rollout of the trackers, supported by Multicomsystem, a long-standing partner of Sensolus in operational implementation. Key factors in choosing the Sensolus systems include their long durability and high connectivity. The wireless trackers are robust yet compactly built, offering a battery life of up to ten years. They use Narrowband-IoT technology (NB-IoT), ensuring optimal connectivity even in the expansive Stendal district. NB-IoT is a global standard recommended wherever low energy consumption and high battery life are crucial, as explained by Sensolus. The introduction and installation of the trackers are remarkably straightforward. As soon as the cloud-based Sensolus platform was activated for Alba users, the individual trackers could be gradually mounted onto the containers and registered via NB-IoT connectivity on the cloud-based management platform.

Resource-saving glass recycling is possible

Additionally, Alba is currently testing Sensolus tracking with fill-level sensors on selectively chosen glass containers in the Stendal district, as we learn further. Instead of conducting glass container emptying rounds on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as usual, trips can now be planned based on demand with the Sensolus fill-level sensors, as stated among the benefits. This reduces travel distances and consequently saves fuel and time. It also enables more efficient utilization of container vehicles and drivers. Given the optimization potential through the use of Sensolus trackers, Alba Niedersachsen-Anhalt sees itself as a pioneer within the group. The Sensolus tracking has already proven itself in scenarios involving many thousands of trackers and can easily exchange data bidirectionally with the group-wide SAP system via a Rest-API. Therefore, nothing stands in the way of a more comprehensive container digitization.
