TFT displays with PCAP touch technology are still predominant in vehicles. However, the trend towards larger displays for infotainment systems is shifting this trend towards In-Cell Touch. By 2025, a market share of over 50 percent is expected.

The growth in TFT displays for central vehicle infotainment had slowed in recent years. According to a recent study by Omdia, however, this trend has reversed. TFT displays with In-Cell Touch technology reached a delivery volume of 26.2 million units in 2023. Thus, the share in 2023 was 35.1 percent and is expected to exceed the 50 percent mark by 2025.

Displays with In-Cell Touch are a special type of touchscreens where the touch-sensitive layer is integrated directly into the LCD panel. Instead of two separate components, the display itself and a separate touchscreen film, In-Cell technology combines both in a thinner and often more cost-effective design.

In-Cell Touch displays on the rise

The In-Cell technology is advancing: In smartphones, the share has risen to 55.2 percent, and in tablet PCs to 45.1 percent. For comparison: In-Cell displays in vehicles increased from 11.7 percent in 2021 to 25 percent in 2022, and finally to 35.1 percent in 2023. The benefits of In-Cell technology include a thinner and often more cost-effective and durable design, as well as improved image quality.

This also affects manufacturers who rely on PCAP technology (Capacitive Touch Displays). With this display technology, the share in 2021 is 86 percent, but experts see a change here. Although PCAP displays in vehicles continue to meet the requirements of car manufacturers, the trend is moving towards In-Cell Touch.

Trend towards larger displays in the vehicle

This trend is also driven by larger displays in the vehicle interior. In 2021, 37 percent of all touchscreen deliveries were for displays with a diagonal of 10 inches or larger. The share of TFT displays with In-Cell technology of 10 inches or greater was 95.7 percent in 2023.

"As growth in smartphones and tablet PCs stagnates, TFT manufacturers are focusing on automotive applications as a new growth engine. This shift is evident in the delivery volumes of touch displays in vehicles, which reached 74.6 million units in 2023," says Calvin Hsieh, Omdia Senior Research Manager for Displays.

"Despite slower than expected growth in 2024, deliveries of In-Cell TFT-LCD displays will continue to rise and are expected to reach a market share of over 50 percent by 2025," concludes Hsieh.
