Battery-powered tools are set to become increasingly important in industrial assembly—especially where flexibility, space-saving and easy handling are required. With this in mind, Gesipa has developed the Fire Birdie: a compact setting tool for blind rivet nuts that is designed for mobile use and limited installation space.

The requirements for blind rivet nut setting tools vary greatly—depending on the industry, component and assembly situation. While compressed air-powered systems are established in many industrial production lines, mobile flexibility, limited installation space in the application and changing requirements demand greater adaptability. The Fire Birdie has been specially designed for such applications and complements the existing portfolio with a battery-powered solution without a stationary infrastructure.

Setting Performance for A Wide Range of Installation Situations

The Fire Birdie works with a brushless DC motor (BLDC) and achieves a setting force of up to 13,000 newtons with a stroke of 0.6 inches. This allows a wide range of rivet nuts to be processed safely, for example with thick or multi-layered materials. According to Gesipa, even hard-to-reach areas can be reached easily thanks to the compact and lightweight design and the narrow tool head. The device is designed for rivet nuts from M3 to M6 in all common materials. It should also be possible to process M8 nuts made of steel, which are often used in vehicle construction or for metal support systems. The Fire Birdie also enables infinite drilling and unthreading—even with long or pre-inserted blind rivet nuts. The twisting process is started automatically by lightly pressing down.

A Question of Attitude

Three modes are available for the setting process: classic travel-controlled, force-controlled or the thread-safe setting, a combination of both. The choice of operating mode depends on the material thickness, material and position of the blind rivet nut, among other things. While the force-controlled setting is suitable for uniform material combinations with defined tolerances, the path-dependent mode offers advantages for components with sensitive surfaces or variable clamping thickness. The combined Thread Safe mode switches the device off automatically as soon as one of the two set maximum values in terms of force or travel has been reached. This feature protects the threads of the blind rivet nuts and ensures safe processes. The modes are set directly on the device.

Efficient Conversion, Flexible Application

A smooth process is crucial, especially with varying material thicknesses, installation locations that are difficult to access or frequent tool changes. For such applications, the Fire Birdie has a drilling and unthreading function that supports processing throughout—even with long or pre-inserted blind rivet nuts. The mandrel can be changed and adjusted in length without tools, which shortens set-up times and facilitates quick changes between work steps.

Battery System With System Compatibility

The Fire Birdie is integrated into the manufacturer-independent Cordless Alliance System (CAS) and uses rechargeable batteries that are also compatible with numerous other power tools—this is currently possible with around 450 tools. This reduces the need for different charging systems, reduces tool wear and ensures greater flexibility—especially in mobile use or when tools are operated in parallel. It also simplifies spare parts management and maintenance, as fewer different components need to be kept in stock.

With its compact design, flexibly adjustable operating modes and wireless power supply, the Fire Birdie complements the Gesipa portfolio with a mobile solution for setting blind rivet nuts—especially where no stationary infrastructure is available.
