The US automotive giant Ford has entered into a partnership with the French car manufacturer Renault to produce two affordable electric cars for European customers, as was announced today. The two Ford-designed and Renault-developed electric car models of the Ford brand are set to be manufactured in Douai (northern France). However, it will take a while, as the first of the two vehicle models is not expected to hit dealerships until early 2028. In the debate about the so-called combustion engine phase-out at the European level from 2035, Ford called for adjusting the goals to reality. Consumers should have the option to drive hybrid vehicles for longer—instead of a forced transition for which they are not ready, said Ford's European chief Jim Baumbick.

Ford and Renault want to make life harder for the Chinese

The two new electric cars mark, according to Ford and Renault, the first step towards a comprehensive new Ford product offensive in Europe. In addition to the agreement in the electric car sector, Ford and the Renault Group also signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation regarding light commercial vehicles, which will also focus on the European market. The main aim appears to be bundling resources to become faster and more efficient, making it significantly harder for competition from China. The development and production of light commercial vehicles for both brands will now be examined. However, despite the cooperation with Renault, both brands remain strictly separate.
