The first commercial hydrogen filling station with its own electrolyzer for light and heavy commercial vehicles is being built in Finland. According to a press release, manufacturer Asahi Kasei has started installing a container-sized alkaline water electrolyzer. The device has an output of one megawatt.

From summer 2026, the electrolyser will produce 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day (approx. 880 lb) - enough to refuel an average of three fuel cell vehicles per hour. By the end of the year, the electrolyzer should be working regularly and permanently at the filling station.

The production capacity can be expanded on a modular basis. According to operator Cefmof Hydrogen, a subsidiary of the Central Finland Mobility Foundation, the maximum daily volume of hydrogen fits into a single 20-foot hydrogen storage container.

Pilot Project with Hydrogen Buses

The filling station is located in Jyväskylä, around two hours' drive north-east of Tampere. As part of a pilot project, the city of Jyväskylä is operating five hydrogen-electric buses from the Portuguese company Caetano Bus in its local transport fleet.
