Endress+Hauser has reached another milestone in the field of sustainability: The Science Based Targets Initiative has validated the corporate group's greenhouse gas reduction targets. Both the mid-term target for 2034 and the net-zero target for 2050 are thus in line with the 1.5-degree pathway of the Paris Agreement and correspond to current scientific findings.

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) provides a framework and guidelines to ensure that companies' emissions reduction targets align with the latest scientific findings. Endress+Hauser has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

In doing so, the Group supports the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

"Only with climate and environmental protection will a livable life on Earth be possible in the future," says Dr. Peter Selders, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group. "Sustainability is therefore not an ideal, but a necessity that we must make economically viable. This applies to our customers and to us. We can support the sustainable transformation of the process industry with our products. Of course, we also have to become more sustainable ourselves—and we are doing that."

Group of companies sets ambitious goals

The SBTi has now validated Endress+Hauser's reduction targets. These include the absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the company from energy consumption (Scope 1) and purchased energy (Scope 2) as well as in the upstream and downstream value chains (Scope 3). Compared to the base year 2023, the corporate group must reduce its emissions by 90 percent by 2050; a maximum of 10 percent may be offset through permanent carbon removal and storage, according to the SBTi guidelines.

As a mid-term goal, Endress+Hauser is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 80 percent by 2034, again compared to 2023. Scope 3 emissions are to be reduced by 35 percent over the same period. "These goals are ambitious, but we are well-positioned," says Julia Schempp, Corporate Sustainability Officer of the corporate group. "We have already identified areas for action and developed a sustainability strategy for our portfolio."

Bundle of measures for emission reduction

In its own sphere of influence, Endress+Hauser aims to increase the share of renewable energy, implement additional efficiency measures, and expand electromobility. To show the group companies where they stand on their path to the 2034 interim target, a CO2 dashboard was set up. It indicates, for example, what emissions are generated by fuel use and external electricity and heat supply and what the share of renewable energy is. Endress+Hauser has also taken a whole bundle of measures to reduce emissions in the upstream and downstream value chains. This Scope 3 accounts for almost the entire greenhouse gas footprint of the corporate group, at 97 percent. "This results from the purchase of steel and aluminum, which we use in our devices, as well as the long service life of our measurement technology," explains Julia Schempp. The corporate group intends to address this in procurement and product design.
