A spot in the Guinness Book of Records is certain for the US manufacturer Lucid, as one of its cars drove from St. Moritz in Switzerland via Austria to Munich.

Lucid is hardly known in Germany. There are only just over 500 electric cars of this type in the country, and they are quite expensive. However, this could change, as a Lucid has reportedly achieved a driving range of 1,205 kilometers (approx. 750 miles) on a single battery charge according to the manufacturer. Admittedly, much of the route was downhill, as St. Moritz is about 1,800 meters (approx. 5,900 ft) above sea level and Munich approximately 500 meters (approx. 1,600 ft). The lowest point of the journey was at Lake Constance (just under 400 meters, approx. 1300 ft, above sea level). After that, the route went uphill to the Arlberg Tunnel, climbing over 1,200 meters (approx. 3,900 ft), and then downhill again, according to the rough course of the journey. The Guinness Book of Records confirmed this top value in the category "Longest journey by an electric car on a single charge." This eclipsed a Mercedes' record (1,045 kilometers, approx. 650 miles) set in June in Japan. However, experts note that in everyday use, the range is likely to be significantly lower than during the record drive.

That's why Range is no Longer so Important for Electric Cars

On the test bench, the Lucid Air Grand Touring model (listed price around 130,000 euros, 152,500 USD) with its approximately 620 kilowatts (831 hp) achieves a range of 960 kilometers (approx. 600 miles), though in real-world usage, the distances are likely to be lower. Despite all the enthusiasm, industry experts consider the record drive to be more of a side issue. They argue that while this kind of record chase may continue, high range is becoming less important—at least in Germany. This is because the charging station network, including fast-charging options, has shifted this aspect out of focus for vehicle owners. On the one hand, only a few long-distance trips are made with electric cars, and on the other, breaks are typically taken every two to three hours, during which charging can be conveniently done. Nevertheless, the success could generally boost the electric car market. Overall, the range of electric cars has increased significantly in recent years.
