With PD-HVX, short for Partial Discharge-High Voltage X, FEV has presented a solution for the early detection and prevention of partial discharge in high-voltage vehicle drives. Partial discharge can lead to damage to the insulation, which in the worst case can result in a total loss of the vehicle.

With the increasing prevalence of 800-volt batteries, the problem of partial discharge is also growing. This is where FEV's PD-HVX solution comes into play.(Image: FEV)

Partial discharge is a locally occurring electrical flashover that can occur at voltages of more than 600 volts. The cause is small defects or inhomogeneities in the insulation material or contamination of surfaces. If it remains undetected within an EDU and occurs repeatedly, partial discharge leads to progressive damage to the insulation and to a premature shutdown of the vehicle.

More 800-V batteries

PD-HVX measures the electromagnetic fields around the drive unit to be analyzed using electromagnetic frequency analysis, which is considered a precise and reliable measurement method in the field of electric drives. From the measurement results, the solution then determines whether partial discharges occur within the drive during operation. "In the field of electrical engineering and high-voltage transmission networks, partial discharge has been known for a long time, and corresponding tests are common practice," explains Dr. Michael Stapelbroek, Vice President Electric Powertrain at FEV. "In the automotive sector, however, the phenomenon is only coming into focus with the increasing spread of 800-volt batteries. […]"

Measurement technology

The FEV solution consists of a comprehensive service package for vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. The measurement technology, optimized for operation on high-voltage vehicle drives, filters out the drive-relevant interference signals, thus enabling better measurement results for partial discharge. The company then provides the data obtained from the tests for evaluation and further interpretation. (se)
