In order to alleviate the shortage of qualified employees in the construction, agricultural and commercial landscaping sectors, machine manufacturers have been relying on the use of autonomous vehicles for some time now. One of the manufacturers of such construction and agricultural machinery is John Deere. At CES 2025, four more vehicles were produced that rely on the use of numerous cameras and artificial intelligence to ensure reliable autonomous operation so that nobody has to be behind the wheel.

"Our customers in agriculture, construction and commercial landscaping all have jobs that need to be done at certain times of the day and year, but for which there is not enough available and skilled labor," explains Jahmy Hindman, Chief Technology Officer at John Deere. "Autonomy can help overcome this challenge. That's why we're expanding our technology stack to enable more machines to operate safely and autonomously in unique and complex environments."

The four vehicles presented below operate via the John Deere Operations Center Mobile, the company's cloud platform. The app can be used to start and stop the machines, position them and monitor them via live videos, images and collected data, for example to adjust the working speed or to find out if there is a problem.

  • The 9RX autonomous tractor is designed for large-scale farming and features the second-generation autonomy system. The tractor is equipped with 16 individual cameras, which are arranged in gondolas and provide a 360-degree view of the field. The system calculates the depth more accurately at greater distances, allowing the tractor to pull more implements and drive faster.
  • The 5ML autonomous tractor for orchards is designed for aerial spraying. Among other things, the tractor is equipped with additional lidar sensors to protect the dense tree crowns in orchards. The model will initially be offered with a diesel engine. A battery-powered tractor of comparable size and capacity is said to be in the works.
  • The 460 P-Tier (ADT) dump truck is designed for quarry operations and handles autonomous material transport.
  • An autonomous, battery-powered lawn mower for commercial landscaping uses the same camera technology as other Deere autonomous machines, but on a smaller scale as the machine has a smaller footprint. With two cameras at the front, left, right and rear, 360-degree coverage is achieved.

The new generation of Deere's autonomy system will also be available in a retrofit kit so that selected machines can be equipped with it. Visitors to CES 2025 will be able to see some of the new machines in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. (sb)
