Founded in 1871, the company is one of the top suppliers in the tire manufacturing industry. The Tires business unit has 20 production and 16 development locations around the world, and a broad product range for passenger cars, commercial and special vehicles, as well as two-wheelers. Services for the tire trade, supplemented by offers for data-based fleet management, round off the overall spectrum.

Serving as the interface between the sensor-equipped tires and a data-centered fleet management is the hybrid data platform Cloudera Data Platform (CDP) Public Cloud. This enables the use and innovation of new technologies and services to make safe, efficient, intelligent, and affordable decisions. This way, Continental not only reduces its operational costs, but also benefits from the latest use cases and open-source innovations - and can pass these on to its customers in the form of an even better service.

Optimal tire condition for fleet performance and fleet safety

Flat tires and roadside assistance cost businesses a lot of time, money, and nerves – and low air pressure is one of the potential triggers for such breakdowns. But, worn tire tread can also significantly impact fleet vehicle safety and fuel efficiency depending on loads, slopes, and terrain conditions. The result: disrupted supply chains and frustrated customers.

In order to counteract this, a solution was required that allows fleet managers to monitor the condition of the tires clearly and in real time and to manage them proactively. All of this should preferably be done using technical data tailored to the industry and the operating environment. For more robust supply chains and greater safety on the roads.

Digital fleet monitoring thanks to Conti Connect.

For seamless tire condition monitoring and management, the collection and storage of data about tire pressure, temperature, and profile is of central importance. Conti Connect, Continental's digital tire management solution, measures these parameters via sensors installed in the tires, thus enabling continuous monitoring of mileage.

Fleet managers have access to all data at any time via a portal or an app. They receive warnings and recommendations for action, for example, if certain values are exceeded or not met. At the same time, they are supported in making precise forecasts in order to maintain their fleet proactively, rather than reactively. The reduced tire wear also increases running performance and safety. This allows Continental to save on avoidable maintenance costs, prevent costly breakdowns, and prevent excessive fuel consumption.

"Everything is based on data and on their use to gain insights for customers. The Cloudera Data Platform offers the opportunity to enable a variety of data-driven use cases on the platform in the future," says Laura Koormann, Global Team Lead Digital Solutions IT, Tire Division of Continental.

The future is now: an innovative and future-proof infrastructure

In the face of constant data growth and in order to provide the best possible service to customers, the Digital Solutions team was looking for a secure and stable infrastructure that combines innovation, future viability, and modern service. What was needed was an easy-to-use, centrally controlled, automated solution that facilitates different data science and AI use cases and scales flexibly and quickly with business growth.

In the long term, the platform is intended to support the tire manufacturer in further expanding and improving all services related to tires - with well-thought-out, integrated innovations, new and continuously further developed applications, as well as guaranteed running times and 24/7 customer support.

The solution: real-time hybrid data management.

In its first major cloud migration project, the Digital Solutions Team at Continental Tires benefited from Cloudera. The company decided to migrate from a legacy on-premises solution to the Cloudera Data Platform (CDP) Public Cloud on Azure. The hybrid data platform enables faster and simpler data management and portable cloud-native data analytics with optimal performance, scalability, and security. This is primarily due to three solutions being used:

  • The Flow Management collects, distributes, and transmits data in real time across multiple generation and consumption points. With Streams Messaging, messages are delivered and distributed between producers and consumers. Stream Processing and Analytics analyzes data streams between producers and consumers within milliseconds.

  • With the Public Cloud, Continental can both reduce costs and optimize support and service. At the same time, the tire manufacturer benefits from customer applications and the latest open-source innovations. Streaming Engine, database and associated technologies are controlled from a single management point.

  • As a result, the hybrid data management platform leads to improved interactions between services as well as higher user-friendliness and security. The company can now offer improved 24/7 support to ensure the best possible uptime for Conti Connect. In addition, Continental plans to leverage the benefits of the platform with data-driven, AI-supported applications.
