The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has finalized regulations for the introduction of Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) technology. In-vehicle and roadside devices are now authorized to operate within the 5.9 GHz band designated for intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

C-V2X facilitates direct communication between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and other road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, and construction workers. This technology supports functions such as non-line-of-sight awareness, alerts about changing road conditions, and automated driving.

The new rules provide the automotive industry with flexibility to use three 10-MHz channels either separately, combined into a 20-MHz channel, or as a single 30-MHz channel. Devices previously approved under C-V2X waivers may continue to be marketed and operated. Additionally, the regulations include a timeline for phasing out existing DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) technologies.

5G Association Welcomes New Rules

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) has expressed its approval of the new regulations. In 2018, the 5GAA submitted its first request for a waiver to allow C-V2X direct communication in the 5.9 GHz band.

According to a statement from the association, the decision provides regulatory certainty for companies eager to deploy the technology. It also accelerates the upcoming national V2X deployment plan. The organization believes C-V2X can contribute to the overarching goal of reducing traffic fatalities to zero.
