With the CB400, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has introduced a high-voltage exchangeable battery for the eActros 300/400 and the eEconic. The Genuine Reworked Batteries have been developed by the commercial vehicle manufacturer as a resource-saving and economically attractive alternative to new replacement batteries—with the goal of extending the lifecycle of high-voltage batteries.

The project for developing the CB400 exchangeable battery was implemented by Mercedes-Benz Trucks at the Center of Competence for Emission-Free Mobility in Mannheim. There, used CB400 batteries from customer vehicles are returned, disassembled, cleaned, and reconditioned according to series standards.

Compared to new production, the reuse of individual components can save around one-third of CO₂e emissions. Non-reconditionable batteries are sent for recycling. Additionally, a later second-life application, such as in stationary energy storage systems, is possible.

Just as Good as New

The CB400 replacement batteries comply with the functional scope and safety standards of the commercial vehicle manufacturer's series standard. Each battery is equipped with the latest software version and undergoes functional and leak tests. Additionally, the Mercedes-Benz Trucks parts warranty applies to the reworked batteries. The availability in various performance classes ensures improved compatibility with the battery packs present in the vehicle.

Future Requirements in Focus

The new offering not only meets repair needs for existing stock but also lays the foundation for future exchange solutions. Insights from the CB400 project are being incorporated into the development of the future CEB500 battery for the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600.

Although production of the first-generation Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 and 400 models will be discontinued at the end of the year, the demand for reliable and economical spare parts remains. The high-voltage exchangeable battery CB400 will also remain available for the Mercedes-Benz eEconic. For fleet operators, the new exchange solution is therefore a real advantage—both economically and ecologically.

The high-voltage replacement batteries are an essential component of the circular economy at Daimler Truck, as demonstrated by the CB400 and, in the future, the CEB500. This interdisciplinary project, which originated from a student work initiated in 2021, now serves as a blueprint for the reconditioning of high-voltage batteries in the commercial vehicle sector. The proximity to the Battery Technology Center in Mannheim enables direct incorporation of experience into the development of new battery platforms. (se)
