Affected by the new Chinese export ban with immediate effect are gallium, germanium, and the metalloid antimony, as announced by the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing. These raw materials are important for the defense industry and chip manufacturers. China, as a key source of these metals, had already restricted their export. Export controls for graphite will be further tightened. The authority justified this move by stating that the USA has politicized and weaponized economic, trade, and technical issues. Washington, in turn, has unjustifiably restricted the export of products to China for national security reasons and has listed numerous companies on sanctions lists.

China is now responding to these US actions

China's move follows Washington's decision to take a tougher stance against the Chinese semiconductor industry. The USA had previously announced additional export controls to slow China's development. The new measures prohibit the export of further key technologies, such as high-performance memory and semiconductor tools, manufactured by U.S. companies or using American technologies. Additionally, 140 more Chinese companies have been placed on a blacklist, making access to U.S. technologies in this area nearly impossible, according to the dpa.

Technology conflict has been simmering for a long time

There had previously been several rounds of chip sanctions against China, which were successively tightened. Some experts point out that due to U.S. actions, China is all the more aggressively pushing the development of its own technologies to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The technology conflict between the USA and China gained momentum under the first Trump administration. At that time, Washington began targeting Chinese companies like Huawei, citing national security concerns. Under President Joe Biden, these measures have not only continued but have also been expanded.
