In light of global political developments, China is indeed facing a challenging year, but so far this has not hindered exports.

Exports are considered an enormously important support of the Chinese economy. The total value of exports from China in 2024 amounted to approximately 3.58 trillion dollars (5.9 percent above the value for 2023), according to the customs authority in Beijing. Imports, on the other hand, increased by only 1.1 percent (around 2.59 trillion dollars). This resulted in a record-high trade surplus of nearly one trillion dollars. Stronger than analysts expected, China's exports surged by 10.7 percent in December compared to the same month of the previous year.

US power shift forces Chinese to take action

The background could be the imminent change of government in the USA. Experts believe that Chinese companies wanted to get rid of their goods for this reason. The designated US President Donald Trump has announced additional tariffs on Chinese products, which would reduce their sales opportunities in the United States and further deteriorate the trade relations between the world's two largest economies, it is further stated. The expected surcharges would dampen China's trade. And China is still struggling with weak domestic consumption and the effects of the real estate crisis.
