The Chinese auto group Chery has unveiled a minivan of the future with the New Journeo Concept. The 5.19-meter long (approx. 17 ft long) adventure MPV features a hybrid drive that allows a range of up to 2,500 kilometers (approx. 1553 miles) and was designed at the European development center in Raunheim, Germany.

The design combines futuristic and robust elements. Increased ground clearance, tires with a rough profile, and an underride protection suggest a certain off-road capability. "CPilot 5.0" is the name of the environment detection system, which also analyzes unpaved roads and conditions the suspension to the terrain.

Opposing sliding doors

Entry into the passenger compartment is via sliding doors that open in opposite directions on both sides. The absence of B-pillars makes the side openings large. The compact cockpit offers two swivel and longitudinally adjustable individual seats. At the rear, there is a bench seat with two places. Between the two rows of seats is an island that can be used as a table when the seats are arranged facing each other.

The rear seat can be transformed into a reclining lounge. Foldable photovoltaic panels serve as sun protection and simultaneously generate solar power, which can be used to operate external devices.

High range through range extender

Chery refers to the drive system as a hybrid. Presumably, it is a primarily electrically driven plug-in hybrid system with a three-speed transmission. The two-liter turbo petrol engine acts as a range extender, enabling the high range potential of 2,500 kilometers (approx. 1553 miles).

Since 2018, Chery has been operating its research and development center in Germany. During this time, the team in Raunheim has developed three concept vehicles. With the latest one, the Chinese aim to draw attention to the upcoming market launch of their brands Jaecoo and Omoda this summer.
