The Chinese OEM has not been well positioned in terms of assistance systems until now. Now, BYD's "Eye of God" technology for automated driving is even set to be used in small cars—a declaration of war.

The Chinese car manufacturer BYD has announced new driver assistance systems and modestly calls the technology behind it the "Eye of God." These are automated driving functions at Level 2 plus. The cars can, for instance, enter and exit highways, maintain and change lanes, or avoid obstacles. Autonomous parking should also be possible.

As the company announced on Monday (10.02.), the system will be used in different stages of development in the models of the various corporate brands. And this is the real highlight - even down to the small car Seagull, which is available in China for just over the equivalent of 9,000 euros (9.457,20 USD).

However, BYD does not intend to make the cars equipped in this way more expensive, which is quite a challenge in the currently raging price war in China. At the same time, the manufacturer is signaling that it is making the technology available to the masses. Other car manufacturers—including European ones - only use such systems in higher vehicle classes.

Three levels for different vehicle classes

BYD intends to offer the "Eye of God" in three levels. The entry-level is marked by the "Eye of God C," which relies on cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. It is to be used in the vehicles of the BYD brand.

The "Eye of God B" is intended for the higher-positioned subsidiaries Denza and Fang Cheng Bao. Here, lidar is used in addition to cameras.

The highest level of the system, the "Eye of God A," comes with multiple lidar systems and is to be installed in the high-end models of the Yangwang brand.
