Chinese automaker BYD unveils new driver assistance systems, boldly naming them 'God's Eye.' Offering Level 2+ automation, the technology enables highway driving, lane changes, obstacle avoidance, and even automatic parking.

As the company announced on Monday (Feb, 10th), the system is to be used in various stages of expansion in the models of the various Group brands. And—and this is the real highlight—all the way down to the Seagull small car, which is available in China for just over the equivalent of 9,000 euros (approx. 9,300 USD).

However, BYD does not want to make the cars equipped in this way more expensive, which is certainly a challenge in the current raging price war in China. At the same time, the manufacturer is sending out a signal that it is making the technology available to the masses. Other car manufacturers - including European ones—only use such systems in higher vehicle classes.

Three levels for different vehicle classes

BYD wants to offer the "Eye of God" in three stages. The "Eye of God C", which relies on cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, marks the start. It is to be used in BYD brand vehicles.

The "Eye of God B" is intended for the higher positioned daughters Denza and Fang Cheng Bao. Lidar is used here in addition to the cameras.

The highest level of the system, the "Eye of God A", comes with several lidar systems and is to be installed in the high-end models of the Yangwang brand.

Our China Market Insider Henrik Bork researches for us how much in-house added value there is in the technology and which suppliers are involved. More on this next week.
